1825. INFORMATION REGARDING POLICE BRUTALITY AT NUL.
Hon. L. Tlali (PR): To ask the Minister of Police and Public Safety, if he is aware that at the recent incidents at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) where students launched a protest strike which was being monitored by the police against destruction of property and general disorderliness, a police officer or officers fired guns loaded with live ammunition thereby mortally wounding one student; and if the Minister is aware, can he explain the following:
- whether the police officers who are deployed are trained in crowd and riot control;
- whether indeed live bullets as opposed to rubber bullets were being used;
- the number of students reported to the Minister as having been brutalised by the police;
- the persons or entities responsible for the health care of the injured;
- reasons provided to the Minister for shooting the student who lost his life;
- disciplinary measures taken against the perpetrators;
- the time when police brutality will be eradicated; and
- the time when the Minister will intervene.
1826. UNLAWFUL FARES IN MANTŠONYANE.
Hon. S. Peea (Thaba-Moea): To ask the Minister of Transport, if he is aware that public transport operators on the Mantšonyane (Ha-Toka) to Lesobeng route charge passengers the unlawful amount of M100.00 without any explanation and without presenting documentation that regulates the new price list; and if so, how soon the Minister will intervene.
1827. CONFLICT OVER GRAZING RIGHTS.
Hon. S. Peea (Thaba-Moea): To ask the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship, if he is aware of the conflict over grazing lands in the rangelands of Sehlabathebe plateau where the pasture was initially under the wardship of the Principal Chief of the area, but it seems has now been placed under a minor chief; and that this has led to the livestock farmers of Matebeng being persecuted and chased out of the grazing lands by the community of Sehlabathebe; and if so, how soon the Minister will intervene for the sake of the people of Matebeng, particularly the villages of Ha-Libete, Setontolo, Ha-Mpiko and others.
1828. REPAIRS TO BRIDGE.
Hon. T. Ramarou (Leribe): To ask the Minister of Public Works, if he is aware that the damaged bridge in the Mohobollo area was included for repairs in the 2016 annual budget but to-date no repairs have been done; and if so, how soon this bridge which is very important to the people of the villages of Mohobollo (which has a school), Maiseng, Ha-Mopapu and Levi’s nek (which has a large church compound) will be repaired.
1829. NEED TO UTILISE IDLE WATER TANK.
Hon. T. Ramarou (Leribe): To ask the Minister of Water, if he is aware that the Ministry built a water tank to serve the villages of Ha-Sekota, Ha-Mohale and Likoting back in 2016 but to-date, even though the tank is always filled with water, there are no pipes to deliver the water to the village; and if so, how soon the Minister will intervene as the people of these villages still draw water from unprotected sources.
